The courtside command
courtside is a command-line tool that works on .dvw files without opening the app. Use it to check a file before you send it, to get a quick summary of a match, or to turn a match into data for a spreadsheet or script.
Install it first: Installing Courtside. The current version is v0.3.0. Its source is public at github.com/cillianbc/courtside-cli, under the AGPL-3.0 licence.
It has three commands:
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
courtside validate | Checks a file for scouting mistakes |
courtside stats | Prints set scores and per-team and per-player statistics |
courtside convert | Writes a .dvw as JSON, or re-saves it as .dvw |
courtside --help lists them, and courtside validate --help (and so on) explains each one.
Check a file
courtside validate match.dvw
It runs the same checks as the app (see The rules Checks use) and prints one line per error or warning: the file and line number, the severity, the rule and what's wrong. Then a total:
match.dvw:412: error: rotation: away won a side-out but didn't rotate
match.dvw:598: warning: substitution: libero 1 served
match.dvw: 1 error(s), 1 warning(s), 5 info (--info to list)
It also checks the file itself, for example that every section DataVolley needs is there.
The command is released separately from the app. A check added to the app recently may not be in your version of the command yet. courtside --version shows which you have; update with brew upgrade courtside or by running the installer again.
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
--info | Also lists the info notes. |
--json | Prints every issue, notes included, as JSON. |
The command ends with exit code 0 when there are no errors, and 1 when there's at least one, so a script can stop on a bad file. It ends with 2 if it can't run at all, for example because the file can't be read.
validate also takes a VolleyStation .vsm file, but only checks that it can be read.
Get the statistics
courtside stats match.dvw
Prints the set scores (Harbour City VC vs Riverside Volley: 25-21, 23-25, …), then for each team and each player the count of each skill by evaluation (# + ! - / =), with the positive rate and efficiency. The output names the symbol set and the formulas it used.
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
--symbols datavolley | Counts positive and negative ratings as DataVolley 4 does by default. This is the default. |
--symbols volleystation | Counts them as VolleyStation Pro does by default. |
--json | Prints JSON instead of text. |
The two symbol sets differ in places. For example, a dig error counts against the digger with datavolley, and is neutral with volleystation.
Convert a file
courtside convert match.dvw match.json
Writes every touch as JSON, one record per play, in the layout openvolley uses. Handy for a spreadsheet or your own analysis.
courtside convert match.dvw copy.dvw
Re-saves the file as .dvw. The output can't be the input file.
Only .dvw files can be converted or summarised for now.
